This is North America’s largest collection of hand-carved, one-of-a-kind totem poles. Over 500 have been placed in the beautiful Niagara Parkway setting overlooking the Niagara Glen and Great Gorge. Some of the trees used are gathered from those that have fallen or died in Niagara Parks, while others have been purchased from local Mennonite communities.

Master Carver Frank Kim presents regular on-site carving and interactive demonstrations. Kim is working on a recreation of a War of 1812 battle, all done in carved totem poles. Kim has even carved some totem poles for a nine-hole mini putt golf, which is included in your admission.

Niagara Glen is located 8 km north of the Falls, just south of the Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens and Butterfly Conservatory.

With a culture deeply rooted in nature, Aboriginal peoples believe that there are no barriers between the spiritual and physical worlds. Come and embrace this enduring reverence for the earth, wind and sky on a voyage that will take you to some of Ontario’s most spectacular natural settings.

Listen to the legend of the making of North America, created when the Great Spirit saved a patch of land on the back of a turtle. Learn about bird and animal spirits that control the weather, the harvest, the underworld and human behaviour.

Embark on a wilderness eco-adventure as you learn about the Aboriginal perspective on beautiful Manitoulin Island. The Great Spirit Circle Trail offers educational and cultural interpretive tours that exhibit the long and rich history of the Anishnabe people.

Venture to tribal fishing and hunting grounds on Rice Lake and discover the Serpent Mounds Park – nine burial mounds that are the graves of the Point Peninsula people. Gaze at the ancient serpent resting quietly in its grove of oaks – far away from jungles of Central America where this sacred symbol is most frequently seen.

Walk with the spirits in the Kawarthas, hike to the Petroglyphs Teaching Rocks and descend deep into the Collingwood Scenic Caves – an ancient Huron place of worship.

Uncover the legend of an Ojibway chief turned to stone by the Spirit of the Deep Sea Water at Sleeping Giant Provincial Park. Hike to the top of the park’s massive granite cliffs for a stunning view of Lake Superior.

Be awe struck at nearby Kakabeka Falls Provincial Park, known as the “Niagara of the North.” You can almost see the legendary Ojibway princess who pretended to guide the enemy Sioux to her people, but instead, led them over the plunging falls.

Come and discover great spirits born of the land in this legendary place called Ontario.

The Yanks are coming! Relive the battles of Crysler’s Farm
The Friends of Crysler’s Farm will be staging the 196th anniversary re-enactment of the battle that halted the last major attempt of an invasion of Canada along the St Lawrence. On November 11, 1813, close to 4,000 American troops attacked a British corps of 1,200 on the ploughed fields of John Crysler’s Farm. In fierce fighting with heavy casualties on both sides, the British troops turned the Americans away who fled back across the river.

On the weekend of July 11 and 12, re-enactors portraying American and Anglo-Canadian armies and His Majesty’s Mohawk Allies will take part in three battles on the grounds of Crysler Memorial Park and inside Upper Canada Village. Many of the units taking part are re-creations of the actual regiments that fought on John Crysler’s Farm. The rattle of musketry will be punctuated by the roar of cannons.

The largest war of 1812 re-enactment in North America
The Friends of Crysler’s Farm are honoured to have been chosen to host the 2009 War of 1812 Grand Tactical, the largest war of 1812 re-enactment in North America. The “armies” will be accompanied by civilians portraying the camp life of those who accompanied armies of the period while they were on the march. The tented camps of both armies, crafters, artisans and settlers will combine to bring the largest-ever display of living history to the area.

Upper Canada Village, immediately adjacent to the Battlefield Memorial, is a re-creation of a typical settlement along the shores of the St. Lawrence at the time of Confederation and in 2000 was named the top visitor attraction in Canada. The site also includes a memorial to the Loyalist settlers who carved the province of Upper Canada from the wilderness after having lost their homes and possessions for their loyalty to the Crown during the American Revolution.

So circle the month of July now on your calendar and watch as history comes alive at Crysler’s Farm Battlefield Memorial.
